Treating Mild, Moderate and Severe Acne
There are two main types of acne – whiteheads and blackheads. These can range in severity from mild to moderate to severe. getting rid of a severe outbreak of blackheads or whiteheads often involves prescription drugs. However over the counter treatments can be just as affective. The severity of an acne outbreak will determine what anti acne treatment is most suitable for you. Treatments can range from simply avoiding certain foods and not applying cosmetics and moisturizers that can clog the pores, to the more powerful treatments of antibiotics and retinoids.
Mild Acne
Mild acne can usually be treated by simply avoiding certain foods that contribute to acne. These can include dairy products such as milk and cheese. also oily fatty food can clog the pores leading to a buildup of trapped oils and dead skin cells were acne causing bacteria can multiply.
Moderate Acne
Benzoyl Peroxide is used to treat mild to moderate acne. It is one of the most popular anti acne treatments and is found in over the counter products such as ProActive and Clearasil. While it can be found in over the counter gels and lotions it is also used in stronger prescription creams. It works by killing P. Acnes – the bacterium that contributes to acne. It does this by introducing oxygen into the pore. It also helps to clear the pores of dead skin cells and oil that lead to pore blockages and acne. It is a powerful medication but must be used continually to prevent a re-emergence of the bacterium responsible for blackheads.
Severe Acne
Severe Acne is often treated with prescription drugs. Antibiotics and retinoids stop or slow the growth of the acne causing bacteria called P. Acne. It also reduces toxins produced by blood cells and free fatty acids that contribute to acne.
Retinoids are often used with antibiotics and have an anti-inflammatory effect. Topical retinoids help to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance by controlling and maintaining remission of inflammatory lesions.
